Chellie Pingree to Serve as Next Congressional Arts Caucus Co-Chair

Posted on: Apr 23, 2018

Last week, as we honored the memory of the late Rep. Louise M. Slaughter (D-NY), we also looked towards the future of arts leadership on Capitol Hill. During last week's reception in celebration of Rep. Slaughter's life and work for the arts, House Leader Nancy Pelosi announced that Rep. Chellie Pingree (D-ME) will be the next Democratic co-chair of the Congressional Arts Caucus. Rep. Pingree follows in the footsteps of Rep. Slaughter, who served as the Democratic Arts Caucus co-chair for twenty-one years. She joins Rep. Leonard Lance (R-NJ) to lead the Caucus of 162 members to support arts-friendly policies.

“Americans for the Arts Action Fund President and CEO Robert L. Lynch expressed his support for this news, saying, "She is a dedicated advocate for the arts, and acutely understands the impact of the arts on Maine and the country at large."

Rep. Pingree serves as a member of the U.S. House Appropriations Interior Subcommittee, which oversees funding for the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) and the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH). She has a pro-arts record, and received a "thumbs up" in our most recent Congressional Arts Report Card.

In her tenure she has worked with colleagues to protect and increase funding for both the NEA and NEH, fought to preserve arts education opportunities, and since 2017 has served as an ex-officio member of the National Council on the Arts, which advises the National Endowment for the Arts.

Rep. Pingree also now joins in congressional caucus leadership with fellow Mainer Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), co-chair of the Senate Cultural Caucus.
