As the second youngest member of the Senate, and an appointee, arts advocates hoped to see Senator George LeMieux back up his words with his vote. In February 2009, LeMieux had this to say about arts and culture in Florida:
"The statistics don't lie. With nearly 75 percent of visitors to the Sunshine State participating in cultural activities and spending twice as much as local attendees while they visit, it is clear that if we want Florida to remain a premiere tourist destination, we must continue to invest in the arts."
With nearly 185,000 arts jobs and $3 billion in arts related revenue in Florida, we couldn’t agree more. With LeMieux not running for re-election, we hope to see an ardent arts supporter following his words and supporting them with action for the arts.
