Senate Arts Report Card - John Ensign

John Ensign

In his floor speech on the stimulus bill in 2009, Senator John Ensign had this to say about the National Endowment for the Arts:

“While Pell Grants, Head Start, and the National Endowment for the Arts may be worthwhile projects in their own right, putting billions of dollars into them will not stimulate the economy.”

In 2007, a study by Americans for the Arts showed that in Clark County alone, one of the 17 counties in Nevada, nonprofit arts and culture organizations and their audiences generated over $204 million in economic activity, supporting over 5,800 full-time equivalent jobs. Apparently, jobs and funds don't count as stimulating the economy.
